Why Music?

The last few weeks, I have been again pondering the value of music. In a world in which almost everything is closed and we are being told to stay at home for the good of public health, what is the real value in music?

First, it is a good stress reliever. Whether listening to or playing music, it can help reduce stress. I don't know all the science behind it, but I think we can all say from experience that it is true. Music boosts our moods and relieves our stress.

Second, it is a good way to focus your mind on something. Playing music forces you to focus on something other than the news. You have to pay attention to the notes you are playing and think about what comes next to be able to practice/play a song.

Third, it is time consuming. Normally, finding time to practice is the hard part, but a lot of us have extra time on our hands right now...even if it's just less time commuting to work or school. Learning new music is a great way to fill our time with something positive and enjoyable.
