Things that Count as Practice

You know you're supposed to "practice" every day. But what activities count as practice? Simple answer: Anything that helps you play better. Playing scales, chord progressions, arpeggios. Tapping out rhythms from your song. Drilling that awkward left hand leap. Exaggerating the dynamics. Listening to a recording of your piece. Recording yourself playing, listening to it while looking at the music and critiquing your playing. Writing notes to yourself in the score. Looking for patterns in the score. Drilling notes or intervals with flashcards or apps.

There are lots of activities that count as practice. Just make sure that you are working on the pieces that you were assigned in your lesson. Two things to keep in mind "Practice what you can't do, not what you can" and "You can always do more than your teacher asked you to."
