As we start a new semester, here are some examples of goals that you can set for yourself for the semester.
1) Practice every day. Or five days a week. Once you have your practice goal, make a practice tracker to record your progress. It can just be a checklist for each day or it can be a picture that you color in another piece each day. Or just put it in your phone calendar and delete the task each day you do it.
2) Memorize a song. Maybe it's something that comes easily to you, so you decide to memorize a longer or harder song. Maybe memorization isn't your strong point, so you chose to memorize a short simple piece.
3) Master your scales. If you already know major, move on to minor scales. A semester is more than enough time to master them, even if you only work on one per week.
4) Perform. Either in a recital or just ask a couple people to listen to you play. Or record yourself playing and post it on your facebook page. Any way that makes you a little nervous and lets you share the progress you're making.
5) Chose a song you want to learn in addition to your regular assignments. Ask your teacher to help you or if it's a piece that is well within your skills, learn it and ask your teacher if you play it for him/her. It will be a nice surprise that you went above and beyond.
Set some kind of goal for yourself this semester and see how much progress you can make in that area before December. You might surprise yourself by how much you can do with one simple goal and the discipline to work at it.
