Presenting Yourself

Writer's picture: pianoteacherjuliepianoteacherjulie

I was in a webinar with other private lesson instructors, and someone asked what your profile picture should be like on an online lesson platform. Should it just be you smiling? Should it be you all rock stared up? I can’t help but think the right answer is, ”whatever is you.”

I firmly believe that there are students for every style of teacher and each one is looking for something different. Do you want to learn to read music, play a variety of songs, and play games during your lessons? Come to me! If you want to be a rock star, or country singer, don’t come to me. I can help you with some foundational skills, but I can’t help that much in styles that I don’t play. That’s fine.

Teachers, present yourself as who you are and the right students will be attracted to you. Students, go with who appeals to you and who you ”click” with. The whole point of learning music is to build skills and play what you enjoy and what to share with the world. Let’s not be afraid to present ourselves as the musicians we are.
