Practice Tips and Strategies

Some things about practice seem obvious. Practice every day. The more you practice the better you get. Don't multitask when practicing. But what should you do during practice?

Start with playing though the whole piece or a big chunk of it. Find your patterns. Find your challenging spots. Go to the challenging spots and figure out what is hard about it. Is it the rhythm? Count and tap the rhythm. Try playing the rhythm on one key with each hand. Both hands tap the right hand rhythm. Both hands tap the left hand part. Both hands tap their own parts. Play the passage with each hand then both hands together. Practice this until it's easy. Then move on.

Is it a tricky fingering? Experiment with different fingerings and chose your favorite.

Is there a leap? Isolate and drill it. When you are starting, look at the note you are going to and know what finger needs to get there. Jump back and forth. Keep doing the leap until you can accurately do it in time without looking.

Do you have a broken chord passage that you're struggling to play the correct notes for? Figure out what chords they are, then play them as blocked chords. Then use those same fingerings for the broken chords.

These are just a few tips for handling common issues in practice.
