Music in Our (Home) Schools

March is Music in Our Schools Month, and there is only so much we can do about music programs in public schools, but what about in home school? I was homeschooled and one of the benefits for me was being able to devote a lot of time to music study and practice once my regular school work was done. How can you incorporate music in your home school?

1) Private music lessons. If your child is interested in a particular instrument, you can definitely put them in music lessons. If you aren't sure which instrument, most music stores will rent instruments out so you can decide before you make that big investment.

2) Look for online music classes. Outschool.com has a variety of classes (including music) that offers students options that include instruction and feedback from teachers and interaction with other students, which is better than just watching youtube videos.

3) Local music groups. Look into your local music scene. See what choirs or ensembles are available for kids in your area and give your kids a chance to participate.

4) Homeschool groups. Reach out to local music teachers and ask if they are interested in offering classes to your students. Many teachers are looking for ways to teach your kids since they are more available during the day. You can probably work out a a great deal for both your group and the teacher.
