Correct vs Musical

First, let's define terms. Playing correctly means playing the right notes at the right time in the right way as indicated by the score. Playing musically means playing correctly with personal investment and interpretation of the score. Both are necessary.

It seems to me that musicians tend to come in two forms, those who play everything technically perfect and those who take liberties to express themselves in the music. The middle ground is the ideal place in this case. The composer wrote what s/he intended and we must play what is indicated correctly. Correct interpretation is included in the score, and we must submit ourselves to what it says. However, we do have freedom to express our creativity within that structure. For example, a dynamic marking does not mean to play every not exactly the same volume. There is a range of piano, a range of forte, etc. It's our decision where in the range we play, which notes we build to, how we interpret rubato. How much we slow down and get softer in that ritardando. Where within the range of that tempo marking we play the piece. There is a lot of room for creativity within the structure, and that creativity is what makes the difference between playing notes and playing music.
